For the latest installment in my Croatia series, we are traveling to one of the most popular cities in the country. Located on the south coast of the country, Dubrovnik is known for its walled Old Town, its historic landmarks, and its enviable viewpoints of the Adriatic Sea. The city is so beautiful that it was used as a location in the hit television adaptation of Game of Thrones. Let’s go over some of the unique activities waiting for you in Dubrovnik.

Wander the Old Walls

No trip to Dubrovnik is complete until you’ve strolled around those iconic walls. There are three entrances to the walkway, those being by Inner Pile Gate, by St Lucas Fortress on St. Dominic’s Street, and by St. John’s Fortress. Once you’ve paid your admission fee you can explore the 1.3 miles (2 km) to your heart’s content.

Explore Stradun

This esplanade is a pedestrian zone flanked by ornate 17th-century buildings that mark the heart of the city. I recommend arriving here early in the day before the crowds arrive. Extend the experience by roaming down the little side streets to grab a late breakfast or early lunch.

Tour Palaces and Monasteries

Dubrovnik is bursting with centuries-old palaces, mansions, and monasteries that you can access as part of your self-guided walking tour. Visit the Rector’s Palace to pour over furnishings and artworks from the 15th to 19th centuries. Meanwhile, the early 13th-century Dominican Monastery draws together architectural styles from the Gothic to the Renaissance eras and the cloistered Franciscan Church and Monastery contains a library and the oldest working pharmacy in the world.

Board the ferry to Lokrum Island

A short ferry from the Old Port deposits you on this small island that features a 19th-century botanical garden and the ruins of the Benedictine Monastery. The boats only operate during the high season (May to November) and my tip is to pack your swimming gear so you can take a dip in the turquoise waters.

Ride the Dubrovnik Cable Car

For a panoramic view that will stay with you long after your vacation comes to a close, ride the cable car up to the summit of Mount Srd. The journey takes 5 minutes and provides a vantage point over the red roofs of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. There is a fort to explore and a beautiful restaurant where you can nurse a glass of wine or order a meal.

Cruise the Adriatic Sea

If you are exploring Croatia by land then take the opportunity to get out on the water for a day. A multitude of sailing and kayaking tours depart from Dubrovnik as either a full day excursion or a sunset trip. If you want to make your trip to Croatia all the more luxurious you may even want to charter a boat during your stay.

Experience Croatian cuisine

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can wind down in one of Dubrovnik’s fantastic bistros. Sample fresh seafood at Trattoria Carmen, savor upscale plates with a view at Dubravka 1836 and cool down between attractions with a gourmet ice cream at Peppino's.

This photogenic city has something to entice all types of travelers. When you are ready to book your trip to Croatia, contact me and we will devise your bespoke itinerary.
