Somewhat overshadowed by its neighbors, Portugal is slowly but surely capturing the attention of travelers hungry for a different perspective of Southern Europe. The culture of Portugal blends festivals, folk music, and rustic villages with an artistic spirit. My insider tip is to anchor your itinerary around the country’s premier wine region, the Douro Valley, which fuses together the best of Portugal. You can always extend your trip to Portugal with a visit to the subtropical island of Madeira, a mere 90-minute flight from Lisbon.
Best time to travel: Anytime.
Particularly for West Coast residents, Hawaii is one of our most easily accessible vacation destinations. When choosing your island it can be easy to default to the volcanic Big Island or the buzzing resort of Waikiki. However, if you’re contemplating traveling to Hawaii next year, consider getting off the beaten track. Connect with local fables on Lanai or tackle the Road to Hana (Hana Highway) on Maui, which also happens to be the most luxurious island within the archipelago.
Best time to travel: March to October.
Italy & Malta
With ancient architecture and some of the finest art in the world, cosmopolitan cities alongside bucolic wine and agricultural regions, pasta and gelato, Italy is one destination that never slips out of fashion. As travel resumes to normalcy, Italy is back on the map and if you’ve yet to dine on carpione with a view of Lake Garda or spend a day roaming the collections and hallways of Vatican City, consider 2022 your moment to resolve that. My suggestion is to embellish your Italian vacation with a side trip to the Mediterranean island of Malta, accessible with a ferry crossing taking as little as two hours.
Best time to travel: April to June or September and October; anytime for Malta.
As well as being one of the best countries to spot the Big 5 on safari, Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve is also the setting of the Great Migration, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Beyond catching a glimpse of the lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo, this East Africa destination entices with its energetic capital city, Nairobi, and its sunkissed beach resorts of Mombasa.
Best time to travel: June to October.
Blessed with some of the whitest, sandiest beaches and warmest, clearest waters on the planet, the Maldives is the quintessential beach destination. Beyond unparalleled luxury resorts, these idyllic islands also offer exceptional diving and a unique culture that might surprise you. Furthermore, the Maldives has led the way with its efforts at creating a safe destination during the pandemic which means you can book your getaway to paradise with confidence.
Best time to travel: November to April.
Our most southerly and least explored continent is the ultimate bucket list destination. Despite its remote setting and the advanced planning required, traveling to Antarctica is straightforward and cruise vessels offer a lavish experience as you sail past colonies of penguins and seals before clamping your own feet onto the icy wonderland.
Best time to travel: November to March.
