Believe it or not, it is estimated that there are well over 1,000 castles throughout the beautiful green countryside of Ireland. Sadly, many of these castles stand abandoned and in ruins. When I was in Ireland our guide would point out this castle and that castle and many times, it would be just a ruin since the Irish cherish their castles.  However, some of these castles have been restored and opened up to the public for exploration or even lodging. If you wish to discover some of these stunning Medieval structures, here are some of the ones that take pride in welcoming visitors from all over the world.

  • The Rock of Cashel: Co. Tipperary, Ireland
The entire past of Rock of Cashel is based on myths which only adds to its uniqueness and charm. Most of the buildings that compost the castle date back as early as the 12th and 13th centuries. Take a walk through the grounds, cemetery, and buildings to view this absolutely dazzling, ancient structure.

  • Bunratty Castle: Co. Clare, Ireland
It is easy to see why this is Ireland’s most well-known castle. Built back in the 1400s this castle served as a tower house. Walk through the castle to peer at all the antiques from the 15th and 16th centuries and even book your place in one of the castle’s Medieval banquets.

  • Blarney Castle: Co. Cork, Ireland
Next to the River Martin and encompassed with luscious greenery is the Medieval keep, Blarney Castle. The McCarthy family built this fortress in the 1200s. Atop the structure is the famous Blarney Stone that is believed to hold magical powers by giving anyone who kisses it, the gift of gab. If you could use a little more encouragement in the flirting department, visit the castle and lean over to kiss the Blarney Stone.

  • Ashford Castle: Co. Mayo, Ireland
If you wish to stay in one Ireland’s most loved castles, stay at the Ashford Castle which has been converted into a luxury hotel. The Guinness (famous Irish beer) family recreated this castle and even expanded it to what it is today.

  • Dublin Castle: Co. Dublin, Dublin
For hundreds of years, this castle served as a spot for the United Kingdom’s government officials to unite. Although it still holds offices for government officials, it is open for exploration by the public. This gigantic stone structure is a must-see.
