How to Get the Most out of Your Hotel Concierge

If you go your entire stay without talking to the experienced hospitality professionals near the front desk, you’re missing out. Hotel concierges are masters of customer service who can help take your trip from good to great.

Get in Touch Before You Arrive

Planning ahead can go a long way. Concierge professionals need time to do their best work. By contacting your hotel’s concierge desk a few weeks before your stay, you give them the opportunity to go above and beyond. If you work with a travel agent, they can coordinate with the concierge on your behalf.
Be Clear About What You Want

When speaking with the concierge, be specific. Is your trip for business or pleasure? Are you by yourself or with your family? Do you have any dietary restrictions?

Every extra piece of information helps the concierge learn your unique situation. Your concierge will be more effective in crafting a delightful experience if you explain you’re looking for a romantic Italian restaurant for your wedding anniversary, rather than merely asking for “a good place to eat.“

Ask Strategically About Available Rooms

If you’ve never stayed at the hotel before, asking for a free room upgrade may be inappropriate. However, there are other ways you can get a little more bang for your buck.

Consider asking the concierge which rooms have the best view or amenities for the price you’ve reserved. Even if you don’t get an upgrade, you’ll still be getting the most for your money.

You can also inquire if there are any paid upgrades available. The concierge might inform you of a relatively inexpensive yet exciting opportunity. Who knows, they may even appreciate your offer to pay and upgrade you for free.

Let the Concierge Help Keep You Safe

The concierge desk is a great resource to learn about safety. After check-in, ask if you should avoid any parts of town. Is it safe to walk outside after dark?

If you lose your passport, a concierge can help you make an appointment at the local embassy to get you back on track.

Be Sure to Tip

For the best service, tip your concierge for their efforts. Perhaps the most effective strategy is to tip half up-front and half once the concierge has finished your request. If the staff knows you tip well, they may put in a little extra effort to help create an exceptional experience.

Keep Expectations Realistic

Concierges are human, too. Don’t show up to a New York hotel expecting the concierge to get tickets to that night’s showing of a popular Broadway show.

Your concierge is there to help make your trip unforgettable. Help them help you by following the tips outlined in this article. If you’re looking for a custom itinerary, book your trip with a travel agent who specializes in crafting truly memorable experiences.
