The Future of Travel

The pandemic has transformed how we work, socialize, and travel. As we approach the two-year mark of the outbreak, we are slowly but surely seeing a gradual return to a new normal. While governments continue to offer vaccinations and boosters we can finally look forward to a safe resume to travel. This is my advice on how to approach trip planning and visiting loved ones further afield or abroad.

Flexibility is key

For the foreseeable future, booking a trip – particularly overseas – will remain unpredictable. My number one advice to all clients who plan to take a vacation in 2022 is to allow their travel plans to remain as flexible as possible. When booking a trip, ensure that you are covered in case of unforeseen circumstances or cancellation due to the coronavirus. Only book with reputable airlines, hotels, and tour services and pay close attention to their pandemic policy.

Even if at the time of booking a pre-departure or return COVID-19 test is not required, be prepared for this to change without much notice.

Stay alert

Keep on top of the latest figures and stay alert to the possibility of further coronavirus variants being confirmed. If a new variant is discovered close to your travel dates, while this will likely impact your departure preparation, it does not necessarily mean that you will need to cancel your trip.

Work with an expert travel agent

If you have any concerns about planning a trip, reach out to a professional travel agent to guide you through the process and ensure that you book with confidence. Independent agents such as myself are connected to travel boards and service providers around the globe and are best placed to advise on the latest travel customs. We are making every possible effort to stay abreast with the ever-changing travel regulations and requirements. Equipped with the latest announcements, we can reduce the stress of travel during the pandemic.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is always an essential part of the travel process but now it’s more important than ever. Certain countries have always required mandatory travel insurance but since the pandemic, others such as Aruba, Chile, and French Polynesia have joined the list with a clause that any policy covers COVID-19 expenses should the traveler transmit the virus. Costa Rica only requires mandatory travel insurance for unvaccinated travelers. As 2022 unfolds, we should be prepared for more governments to tighten up.

Where to travel in 2022

And where might your travels take you in the New Year? I have rounded up the best places to travel in 2022 based on the current state of travel. From the overlooked Southern European nation of Portugal – one of the top wine destinations – to the bucket list pick of Antarctica, my guide has something to ignite wanderlust in every traveler. In terms of being flexible, it’s not too late to scoop up a last-minute getaway to escape the January blues or look ahead to January 2023. Swap the grey skies for the Northern Lights, a tropical beach escape, or a wildlife cruise!
