Gelato! This frozen Italian treat is a must when visiting the region! Gelato is typically stored at a warmer freezing temperature making the flavors much more intense! These unique flavors intrigue the palate and satisfy your sweet tooth. I’ve listed some of my absolute favorites. Riso This gelato is so creamy and not too sweet. It’s like frozen rice pudding! The subtle hints of nutmeg and vanilla make it a pleasant treat and is an absolute favorite. Spagnola / Amarena This is the perfect mix of sweet and sour. The sweetness of the cherries combined with the sour cherry sauce makes for a wonderful frozen treat. The gelato is very creamy, and the sour cherry sauce balances out the sweetness of the cherries. Fico Okay, so technically you can’t call this gelato. It’s more of a sorbet because it’s made without milk. The flavor is so amazing that I have to put it on my list. The fig flavor is so intense you’ll be amazed how much it tastes like the real thing—seeds and all! If you’ve shied away from fruit flavor gelatos in the past, this one just may convert you. Cioccolato Con Peperoncino This creamy chocolate gelato is infused with different types of peppers. You can get a mild version with just a hint of spices that requires you to drink a gallon of water afterward! If “some like it hot,” then this gelato is perfect! Stracciatella If you were to compare this to the chocolate chip ice cream to something here in the States, you’d be horribly wrong. Just say no to big chocolate chunks and yes to uniform streams of chocolate melted into the churning ice cream. Ricotta Stregata This gelato is translated perfectly, “bewitched ricotta.” The ricotta has crunchy hazelnuts, lemon and orange peel with a dash of Strega liqueur that is a delight to the taste buds. Zuppa Inglese This gelato comes with bits of sponge cake or cookies and is topped off with a sweet liqueur. What’s not to love? This creamy, custard-flavored base is a definite favorite. Liquirizia When licorice and gelato mix, the licorice becomes slightly muted, and a minty edge emerges. Definitely give this a try! Zabaione This gelato has an eggy and custardy flavor. It’s different from its English counterpart because of the alcohol used. Cannella The fresh cinnamon powder is the only flavor in this gelato making it perfect during the Christmas holidays.
