Which Cruise Is Best for You: More Adventure or More Luxury?

How to choose the right expedition cruise.

August 21, 2026

When you imagine an expedition cruise, you may conjure an image of wearing rubber boots while being flung around icy seas. However, the reality of a modern expedition cruise spans a broad spectrum: some itineraries are designed for travelers who wish to get as close to wild landscapes as possible, others pair remote destinations with fine dining and service akin to that found in luxury hotels. The key is deciding what you want from the journey: more adventure, more luxury, or a balance of both.

Choose adventure if the destination comes first

If you’re looking to step ashore in a place few travelers reach, an adventure-first expedition is likely to appeal. These voyages prioritize exploration over onboard indulgence, with smaller ships able to navigate narrow waterways and remote coastlines. Days are often shaped by the weather and wildlife: a whale sighting might alter the itinerary, while a calm sea could mean an unexpected Zodiac landing.

The Arctic is particularly well suited to an adventure cruise. Expeditions around Svalbard, Greenland, and the High Arctic offer opportunities to see polar bears, walruses, and seabirds while exploring enormous glaciers and remote settlements. The landscape is the ultimate attraction, and being able to reach places inaccessible to larger cruise ships is an adventure in its own right.

Antarctica takes this a step further. Zodiac excursions, shore landings, and wildlife encounters are central to the experience, whether you are watching penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula or cruising between icebergs. You may even dare to brave an overnight camping experience on the ice or plunge into the frigid waters.

Choose luxury if the journey matters as much as the destination

Luxury expedition cruising lets you explore the world’s wildest corners without giving up the comforts of a top-tier hotel. Onboard, that equates to plush suites, butler services, upscale wining and dining, and spa amenities. These cruises still include Zodiac excursions, wildlife watching, and land activities. The difference is that you return from the adventure to a more indulgent environment.

This approach works particularly well for the British Isles and Iceland, where expedition cruising combines dramatic scenery and cultural discovery with plenty of time to enjoy the ship. Around the British Isles, for example, a voyage might link remote Scottish islands, historic castles, and wildlife-rich coastlines, whereas Iceland offers volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, and geothermal landscapes.

The River Nile presents another interpretation of expedition-style cruising. Rather than polar wilderness, the focus is on archaeology, history, and culture. A smaller ship provides a more intimate way to travel between ancient temples and archaeological sites, with the experience enhanced by knowledgeable guides and time ashore.

Why not choose both?

The advantage of modern expedition cruising is that you don’t necessarily have to choose between adventure and luxury; expedition ships increasingly blur the line between adventure and indulgence. You can spend the morning kayaking past an iceberg, return to the ship for lunch, and finish the afternoon relaxing in a spa or watching the scenery from your suite.

The important question when comparing cruises is “how do you want to experience the destination?” Consider the size and style of the vessel, the availability of shore excursions, how much time is spent exploring independently, and what is included onboard. Assess whether you would rather spend more of your time hiking, kayaking, and searching for wildlife, or strike more balance between those experiences and exceptional food and time to unwind.

At the end of the day, an expedition cruise is less about ticking off a list of ports and more about immersing yourself in some of the planet’s most extraordinary environments. Contact Darby’s Destinations to discuss cruise operators and destinations.
