I built a twelve-day route that never asks them to backtrack: four nights in Rome, then a private first-class rail transfer down to Sorrento for six, using the Bay of Naples as home base for everything else. In Rome, a private guide walked them through the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, followed the next day by a private Vatican grand tour, Sistine Chapel included, without the shuffle-along group pace.The centerpiece was the day I built around Panni. Rather than treat it as a detour, I paired a private guided morning in Pompeii with an unhurried afternoon in Panni itself, no tour, no schedule, just time in her mother's hometown. Around that, I added a small-group boat day to Capri, a private driver day through Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and a lemon-grove tour in Sorrento with tastings of limoncello and lemon-infused olive oil. Every transfer, in and out of Rome, to the train station, to the airport, was private and prearranged, which mattered given her husband's health. No hauling luggage through a station, no standing around hoping a taxi shows up.

I built the whole week around a single base in Jackson Hole, a Two-Bedroom Bi-Level Suite at Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa, with a private bedroom, a main-level queen Murphy bed, and an enclosed loft with two twins, so the two kids each had their own space without a second reservation. From there, everything radiated out. A private sunset wildlife tour wound through Grand Teton's back roads, moose and bison included, and a full private-guided day in Yellowstone covered Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with a gourmet picnic built in.

For the slower stretch they wanted, I added a 7-mile scenic float down the Snake River and a soak at Astoria Hot Mineral Springs, plus a free day for the Jenny Lake hiking loop. For something they hadn't done before, an evening at the Jackson Hole Rodeo. Before flying home, a spa afternoon at the hotel and a ride up the aerial tram to 4,139 feet, for one last look at the Tetons from above. Every tour was private and pre-booked, so once they landed, the only real decision left each day was which view to look at.

I built a two-part trip, both halves handled directly through AmaWaterways: a four-night pre-land journey through Switzerland, then seven nights on the water. The same cruise director who leads the river cruise travels with the group from day one in Zurich, so there's no handoff between the land portion and the ship, just one continuous trip with the same person guiding it the whole way through. They started with two nights in Zurich, then two more in Lucerne, including a cable car ride up Mount Rigi and a walking tour past Chapel Bridge and the medieval Old Town walls. From there, the group boarded AmaWaterways' AmaLucia in Basel for the line's Enchanting Rhine itinerary, a seven-night sailing through a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of river lined with roughly 40 castles, a route I chose because it's a strong fit for first-time cruisers, and a well-timed sailing lined up with a solid AmaWaterways promotion.

Each stop came with a choice of included excursions rather than one fixed plan for everyone: Colmar or the Black Forest from Breisach, Heidelberg or Speyer from Ludwigshafen, wine tastings and vineyard hikes in Rüdesheim, a walking tour or a side trip to Cologne from Düsseldorf, and a canal cruise through Amsterdam to close things out. That structure meant they could choose an active day or an easy one depending on how they felt, rather than being carried through one fixed schedule with everyone else on board.
